December 4: Cole’s 103rd Anniversary and Repeal Day Celebration

Cole’s Red Car Bar is celebrating its 103rd Anniversary and hosting a Repeal Day celebration on Sunday, December 4th. Created in 2006 by Jeffrey Morgenthaler, Repeal Day is celebrated by imbibers around the country to honor the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and the end of thirteen years of Prohibition.

Free French Dips: get 'em while you can.

Cole’s is joining in the festivities with a New Year’s Eve-style bash counting down to midnight that includes:

Free French Dip sandwiches for the first 200 guests in honor of Cole’s anniversary.
Free Bathtub Gin Punch by Plymouth Gin, served from a bathtub ice sculpture from 9pm to midnight (or until it runs out).
Midnight champagne toast to start Repeal Day.

Jimmy Barela Award
Before the stroke of midnight, two of LA’s top bartenders will go head-to-head and vie for the Jimmy Barela Award, which honors the legendary bartender who held court at the Red Car Bar for 65 years, from 1918 to 1983. In 2009, the inaugural award went to Julian Cox (for his G.T. Foam Home) and last year’s winner was Oliver Jones with his Myrtle Berry Flip. Both barmen had their winning cocktails featured on the Red Car bar menu.

This year’s finalists will be selected from a pool of eight bartenders competing earlier on Sunday at The Varnish, in an invitation-only tournament hosted by Eric Alperin and judged by industry peers. The 2011 Jimmy Barela Award winner will be announced at midnight, and the victor will have the honor of pouring the champagne down the pyramid of glasses set up for the occasion.

La Descarga Launches Fall Cocktails and Wednesday Music Night

For the first time since it opened, La Descarga has launched a cocktail menu that doesn’t include new drinks created by Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix. The Fall Cocktail Menu has 16 drinks, with half the list featuring rum classics and Descarga signatures, and the other half dedicated to cocktails fueled by cachaça, mezcal, tequila, rye, white dog and pisco.

Head bartender Kenny Arbuckle created most of the new drinks.

Favorites like the Mojito, Hemingway Daiquiri and Tapping the Admiral are back, along with new drinks created by the Descarga crew, under the supervision of head bartender Kenny Arbuckle (St. Vincent Syrups). Livigni said, “Kenny did most of the drinks, but Meghan Malloy and Armando Conway contributed as well. Pablo and I are super proud of the menu and our staff.” Livigni noted that La Descarga now carries over 100 rums, an expanded list that includes “some great stuff from Angostura, Plantation, Ron Abuelo and Rhum Clément.”

When Caroline on Crack organized a meet-up to take the new menu for a spin, I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to join my cocktailing comrades. After reading Caroline’s recap, I went into full-on dirt-kicking mode. Fortunately, I was able to stop by La Descarga the following week, joined by Bill Esparza (Street Gourmet LA) and Lauren Clark (Drink Boston), who recently moved to LA from Beantown.

Cartographer

I started with the Cartographer, made with El Dorado 12-Year, Cynar, Angostura Bitters and superfine cane sugar. Arbuckle explained that a couple of guests had asked him for a rum Old Fashioned, which developed into the Cartographer. Like its inspiration, the excellent Cartographer is a pared down cocktail with depth that opens up with each sip.

Aperol M'ama

My second round was the Aperol M’ama: Campo de Encanto Pisco, Aperol, sugar and lime. This delicious tall drink was created by Malloy, and may well have been my favorite of the night. Bright, well balanced and one of the best cocktails featuring Encanto Pisco that I’ve had, and there have been some great ones of late.

Two other drinks, both created by Conway:

Martinique Smuggler: Clément Première Canne, orgeat, Disarrono, grapefruit and lime.

Blood and Samba, a Blood and Sand variation with cachaça, Carpano Antica, Cherry Heering and orange juice.

Following are the remaining drinks on the Fall Cocktail Menu, which I am eager to work my way through.

Maguey Sour: Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Benedictine, orgeat, lemon juice, egg white, grated nutmeg
Mary Pickford: Starr Rum, lime, maraschino, grenadine, pineapple

OnBeat: House Spirits White Dog Whiskey, lemon juice, mango-basil syrup, Bitter Truth Lemon Bitters

The Conganas are up there somewhere, playing Salsa and vintage Latin music.

Livigni said that guests have clamored for more live music to dance to, so along with the new drinks, La Descarga is now dedicating Wednesday nights to music and dancing. Lead by Christian Moraga, The Conganas are playing live Salsa and vintage Latin music all night every Wednesday. As Livigni said, “it’s turned into the best night to get your Salsa fix and beat the weekend crowds.” Indeed, with plenty of room to move around, sipping an Aperol M’ama while The Conganas are laying down the grooves becomes that much sweeter of an experience.

Translated from Twitterspeak, the Street Gourmet LA writer and musician will be making his La Descarga debut and leading the house band during Wednesday’s Cuatro de Mayo Celebration.

Tequila and mezcal-fueled cocktails and shots will be featured all night, including the “Wet Baquiri,” “Kraken Micheladas” and more. For early arrivals, the Camarena Tequila Taco Truck will be outside La Descarga starting at 9:30pm, dishing out free tequila-infused grub while it lasts.

Cinco de Mayo may have limited national significance in Mexico, but here in the U.S. and elsewhere, it’s a great day to celebrate Mexican culture by imbibing some of its finest exports. The Tijuana Underground at Vitello’s
Meanwhile in the 818, Bill Esparza (Street Gourmet LA) is teaming up with his friends Chuy Tovar (Real de Mexico Tequila) and Brad Roen (Vitello’s) to present a night of music, food and of course tequila. Esparza’s Cinco de Mayo party at Vitello’s is a return to a family tradition started by his father’s cousins in Northern California, which Esparza kept going here in LA until recently. As Esparza says on the party’s Facebook event page:

March 17: Casey’s St. Patrick’s Day Street Fair

Hope you’ve been doing your liver stretches, friends: the last Mardi Gras beads were thrown just hours ago, and now St. Patrick’s Day is on deck. For those who want to go big and start the festivities as early as possible, 213 Nightlife is throwing what is being billed as LA’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration: Casey’s St. Patrick’s Day Street Fair.

On Thursday, March 17th, Casey’s Irish Pub opens its doors at 6am for “sunrise service,” featuring green beer, Jameson-fueled Irish coffee, and of course pints o’ Guinness. But that’s only the beginning. Casey’s will be closing down Grand Avenue, extending the St. Patrick’s Day festivities from Wilshire to 6th Street, with live bands and DJs spinning from the Grand Avenue stage. The music starts over at Pershing Square, featuring a free lunchtime concert by the Young Dubliners. A traditional bagpiper will lead the pilgrimage back to Casey’s for performances by tribute bands Hollywood U2, Ollin Band, and Petty Cash, plus DJs from 98.7 and 100.3.

To soak up all that Irish spirit, breakfast will be served from 7am to 10am, followed by Casey’s St. Patty’s Lunch & Dinner Menu from 11am to close. Fellow 213 Nightlife venue Cole’s will be joining in on the fun, selling food and refreshments at Pershing Square during lunch.

And if those Irish eyes start seeing double, the Yellow Cab Co. is sponsoring a taxi stand at Wilshire and Grand, with a street team and post-up of cabs, guaranteeing rides for revelers.

Proving that his interests go beyond great cocktails and fine spirits, 213 Proprietor Cedd Moses is teaming up with The Beer Chicks (Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune) to present the inaugural L.A. Craft Beer Crawl, taking place in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, September 25th. For the price of one ticket, Crawlers will get unlimited samples of 50 craft beers, including Allagash, Brouwerij West, Craftsman, Dogfish Head, Eagle Rock, Jolly Pumpkin, Lost Coast, Stone, Telegraph, Unibroue and many more. The Crawl will be hosted at 213 bars Seven Grand, Cole’s, The Varnish, Las Perlas, Casey’s, Golden Gopher, Broadway Bar and Caña. The beer selection is curated by Perozzi and Beaune, authors of The Naked Pint: An Unadulterated Guide to Craft Beer.

The Crawl begins at Casey’s Irish Pub, where Crawlers will get a 6-ounce tasting glass, wristband and map (sure to come in handy after a few samples). Each 213 venue will offer its own distinct vibe and host different craft breweries: Seven Grand will pour barrel-aged beers with scotch and bourbon enhanced notes; The Beer Chicks will sign books at Golden Gopher; Pulitzer Prize winning food writer Jonathan Gold will host the VIP Room at the Varnish, where guests can enjoy Cole’s French Dip sandwiches paired with top German-style taps, as well as beer cocktails and a meet and greet with brewers.

To help Crawlers soak up the suds, Gold has selected some of L.A.’s top gourmet food trucks, including Grilled Cheese Truck, LudoTruck and Manila Machine.

Following a February event that NBC’s Joshua Lurie called “a culinary earthquake that has triggered several mobile aftershocks,” the LA Street Food Fest returns with an all-new Summer Tasting Event on Saturday, July 24th at the Rose Bowl.

Event co-founders Shawna Dawson (Sauce LA) and Sonja Rasula (UNIQUE LA) have addressed the crowds and long lines from the February Street Food Fest by capping attendance for the Summer Tasting Event at 5,000 (the Rose Bowl was built to handle crowds in excess of 90,000). Additionally, the all-inclusive tickets will be pre-sale only, and exclusively available online.

For the price of one ticket, guests can sample signature bites from over 60 vendors, including gourmet food trucks, Old School carts and stands, celebrity chefs, and street-inspired dishes from some of LA’s best restaurants. Vendors will be serving from tented booths on the field of the world famous Rose Bowl, where attendees can grab a blanket and enjoy their food on the grass, dine at a picnic table or in a shaded lounge, or work on their tan up in the stands.

Summer Tasting vendors will participate in a Cook-Off Competition judged by a panel of experts, led by Susan Feniger (Border Grill, Ciudad, STREET), who says “the single biggest influence on my career as a chef has been street food.”

July 13: Radio Room at the Edison Celebrates Manhattan

On Tuesday, July 13, the Edison will be in a New York state of mind when it celebrates the upcoming launch of the Edison New York with its latest Radio Room, featuring guest mixologists Michael Neff, Kenneth McCoy and Abdul Tabini of Ward III in Tribeca. The trio of owners/bartenders have garnered acclaim for their bespoke cocktails, created on the spot from customer choices of Spirit, Flavor, Texture, Fruit and Spice.

Every edition of the Radio Room has a special cocktail menu that features signature cocktails from each guest, a great way to sample drinks from the best bars in the country. Following is the cocktail list for this month’s Radio Room, including each drink’s creator in parentheses.

Radio Room – July 2010 Cocktail Menu

Baby Eveline (Michael Neff) – Vodka of your choice, muddled strawberries, lemon juice, Peychaud’s bitters, Martini & Rossi Prosecco.
Four Stars (Neff) – Herradura silver tequila, lime juice, muddled rosemary and cilantro, dab of Sriracha hot sauce.
Hell Bent for Leather (Kenneth McCoy) – Woodford Reserve bourbon (Edison’s private bottling), Irish whiskey, orange and lemon peel, muddled cardamom seed.
The Collective (McCoy) – Dewar’s 12-Year, Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth, clover honey, lemon juice, orange bitters, egg whites.
Angel Zakir (Abdul Tabini) – Martin Miller’s gin, muddled cucumber, basil and lime juice, Aperol.
Tortuga (Tabini) – Bacardi 8 rum, muddled lime, orange and lemon, dusting of shaved cinnamon.
