On Tuesday, July 13, the Edison will be in a New York state of mind when it celebrates the upcoming launch of the Edison New York with its latest Radio Room, featuring guest mixologists Michael Neff, Kenneth McCoy and Abdul Tabini of Ward III in Tribeca. The trio of owners/bartenders have garnered acclaim for their bespoke cocktails, created on the spot from customer choices of Spirit, Flavor, Texture, Fruit and Spice.

Every edition of the Radio Room has a special cocktail menu that features signature cocktails from each guest, a great way to sample drinks from the best bars in the country. Following is the cocktail list for this month’s Radio Room, including each drink’s creator in parentheses.

Radio Room – July 2010 Cocktail Menu

Baby Eveline (Michael Neff) – Vodka of your choice, muddled strawberries, lemon juice, Peychaud’s bitters, Martini & Rossi Prosecco.
Four Stars (Neff) – Herradura silver tequila, lime juice, muddled rosemary and cilantro, dab of Sriracha hot sauce.
Hell Bent for Leather (Kenneth McCoy) – Woodford Reserve bourbon (Edison’s private bottling), Irish whiskey, orange and lemon peel, muddled cardamom seed.
The Collective (McCoy) – Dewar’s 12-Year, Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth, clover honey, lemon juice, orange bitters, egg whites.
Angel Zakir (Abdul Tabini) – Martin Miller’s gin, muddled cucumber, basil and lime juice, Aperol.
Tortuga (Tabini) – Bacardi 8 rum, muddled lime, orange and lemon, dusting of shaved cinnamon.

Since its relaunch in February 2009, the Radio Room at the Edison has hosted guest mixologists from top bars such as Bourbon & Branch, Death & Co., Milk & Honey, Drink, Heaven’s Dog, Clyde Common, Cure, and Rickhouse. The most recent edition of the Radio Room welcomed Simon Ford (Pernod Ricard, London & NYC), Zane Harris (Rob Roy, Seattle), Giuseppe Gonzalez (Dutch Kills & Painkiller, NYC) and Don Lee (Momofuku Restaurants, NYC). Radio Room’s special cocktail menus feature signature cocktails from each guest, a great way to sample drinks from the best bars in the country.

On Tuesday, May 25, Radio Room returns with a reunion of sorts, as Joseph Brooke (The Edison’s Director of Spirits) welcomes his mentor, LA’s own Vincenzo Marianella (Copa d’Oro). Before joining The Edison, Brooke honed his skills at Copa d’Oro, named by 944 and LA magazine as LA’s Best New Bar, and the recipient of accolades from virtually every publication that follows contemporary cocktail culture.

Also visiting Radio Room is H. Joseph Ehrmann, of San Francisco’s Elixir. Located in the Mission District, Elixir was the first bar to be certified as a Green Business by the city. In March, Ehrmann was named the 2010 Bartender of the Year by Nightclub & Bar Magazine.

And traveling farther than any Radio Room guest to date is Hamish McShane, of Bayswater Brasserie in Sydney, Australia. McShane’s bar program has been internationally recognized, including being named one of the “World’s Top 20 Bars” by Bartender Magazine.

Radio Room Preview Event and Announcing the Edison New York

Since its relaunch last February, the Radio Room at the Edison has hosted guest mixologists from top bars such as Bourbon & Branch, Death & Co., Milk & Honey, Drink, Heaven’s Dog, Clyde Common, and Cure. Last month, the Radio Room brought in San Francisco’s Erick Castro (Rickhouse) and New York’s Brian Miller (Death & Co.).

On Tuesday, March 30, Radio Room returns to The Edison with Joseph Brooke (Edison Director of Spirits) and visiting mixologists Simon Ford (Pernod Ricard, London & NYC), Zane Harris (Rob Roy, Seattle), Giuseppe Gonzalez (Dutch Kills & Painkiller, NYC) and Don Lee (Momofuku Restaurants, NYC). The Radio Room cocktail menu will feature signature cocktails from each guest, a great way to sample drinks from the best bars in the country.

The Radio Room has updated its format for this edition. Each guest mixologist will be stationed in individual serving areas, and will offer only their own specialty cocktails. Drink tickets for the visiting bartenders will be sold to guests at ticket locations or can be bought from servers. This new format is intended to give guests a more personal experience with each visiting bartender. Edison staff will serve all other cocktails, food and beverages.

Speaking of food, the Radio Room will feature “Meroir: A Sense of the Sea,” from Matre Ecailler Christophe Happillon (The Oyster Gourmet). The evening’s specials will include freshly shucked oysters and crab claws.

Entertainment will be provided by Portland’s March Fourth Marching Band, “a charismatic big band spectacular that takes audiences on a musical journey around the globe.” I saw them perform at last September’s Radio Room, and they were fantastic. March Fourth’s eclectic mix of funk, big band, jazz, gypsy and other music genres, along with sensual dancers and stilt walkers, blew the roof off the Edison.

The Infante

PRESS PREVIEW EVENT
Last night, the media was invited by Dan Cox PR to a special Radio Room sneak preview event. After checking in, I made my way downstairs and joined Esther (e*star LA), Maya (ShopEatSleep), and H.C. (L.A. & O.C. Foodventures) at the bar along with many more familiar faces. The big topic of discussion was the press release we received: The Edison is opening a second venue in New York! Details on the new location in Manhattan are being finalized. Edison owner Andrew Meieran expects The Edison New York to debut in about 18 months, with a design that will “build upon architectural artifacts in the new location,” just as the original Edison did here in Los Angeles. After that bit of exciting news, we were ready for our cocktails.

Wild Orchid

Our first guest mixologist was Giuseppe Gonzalez, who mixed his Infante (Casa Noble tequila, lime, orgeat, orange blossom water, freshly grated nutmeg) for Esther and Maya, while H.C. and I had the Wild Orchid (Beefeater gin, orgeat, St. Germain elderflower, and a red wine float). Both cocktails are featured at Dutch Kills in New York. As he mixed our drinks, Giuseppe talked a bit about Painkiller, the tiki bar he’s opening soon in New York’s Lower East Side. If nothing else, the interior design should be interesting: a mashup of tiki culture and New York in the ’70s.

Giuseppe informed us that normally the Wild Orchid is made with crushed ice, while the Radio Room version called for a red wine float to simulate the layering. It was certainly refreshing and a great way to start the night. He also told us the Infante is the bar’s best-selling tequila cocktail, and after taking a sip it’s easy to see why.

The Rite of Spring

As we sipped Giuseppe’s cocktails and nibbled on crab claws, we were also offered a cocktail from Don Lee of Momofuku, New York. The Southern California expat, who runs the spirits program for Momofuku Ssäm Bar, came on strong with the Rite of Spring, a fresh, seasonal twist on the classic Gibson. For his variation, Don infused Absolut 100 with onions, Korean peppers, and rice vinegar. The result was overpowering; the onion aroma hit me well before I took a sip. The spice and vinegar were there as well, but didn’t have a chance against the onion.

We thought maybe a different spirit (gin, for starters) would hold up better in the infusion. Don told us later that, because others had used gin, whiskey etc., he had to vary the base spirit and use Absolut. It’s too bad, because I actually like the concept and I think the potential is there for something really good. We even tried tasting the Rite of Spring with different food, such as the crab and oysters on the half shell. This improved the experience somewhat, but it still didn’t quite work for me. That said, I found out later that other guests really liked it.

Zane Harris

Vieux Cerde

Next up was Zane Harris, co-owner of Seattle’s Rob Roy, and (according to his bio) voted by his fellow bartenders as “most likely to survive the Zombiepocalypse.” Alas, I didn’t get to ask him about this last night, so Zane’s mysterious survival skills will have to await further investigation. One thing is certain, though; Zane mixed my favorite cocktails of the night. For me the standout was the Vieux Cerde, made with Jameson 12 year old Irish whiskey, VSOP Cognac, a light drizzle of Elisir M.P. Roux, and bitters. It’s a superb, balanced cocktail with complexity and depth. The whiskey is highlighted, rounded by the cognac, enhanced by the liqueur and the bitters.

Esther really enjoyed her Globo Rojo #2 (mezcal, strawberries, tawny port, bitters). As with the Vieux Cerde, the Globo Rojo was an excellent balance, in this case between smoke and sweet, with deeper flavors provided by the port and bitters.

Good Morning, Vietnam

Our final drink was the Good Morning, Vietnam from Simon Ford, Director of Brand Education and Trade Outreach for Pernod Ricard USA. His “breakfast of champions” is made with gin, ginger, orange marmalade, and lemon juice. It was hard to discern the ginger, but the sweet citrus of the marmalade and the tart lemon played well with the aromatics of the gin. Simon’s cocktail was the perfect way to end our Radio Room session. And if we ever take Simon’s suggestion, his drink could make for a very interesting way to start the day, as well.

In November, the Radio Room brought in guests Kirk Estopinal, Richard Gomez, and Danny Valdez from Cure (New Orleans), along with Plymouth Gin brand ambassador Simon Ford.

After a brief hiatus, the Radio Room returns on Tuesday, February 23rd. The first Radio Room of 2010 features Joe Brooke, the Edison’s newly-appointed Director of Spirits, and winner of America’s Best Bartender competition. Joining him are San Francisco’s Erick Castro (Rickhouse) and New York’s Brian Miller (Death & Co.). They’ll each bring a selection of their signature cocktails to the Radio Room menu, a great way to sample drinks from around the country in one night.

In addition to imbibing cocktails from the Edison’s ace bartending team, guests will be entertained by Vagabond Opera, a six-piece “Bohemian cabaret ensemble” based in Portland, Oregon. 2010: So Far, So Good

So far, 2010 is off to a great start: got up early this morning, made brunch with my brother, had a nice Chinese seafood dinner with the family, then topped off the evening with a Manhattan at home on a quiet Friday night.

Day One may be winding down, but a look at the calendar says there’s a lot going on in the next several months:

Mystery Bar

Just before the end of the year, LA Weekly posted a tease about a mysterious new bar set to open at the end of this month. Not much in the way of detail, although there’s this intriguing bit: “the bar has the best entrance, hands down, of any heretofore seen. That includes, hot dog stands, phone booths, and hidden bookcases.” Can’t wait to hear more about this place!

Update Jan. 4: In its look at 2010 nightlife trends, the LA Times notes that the Houston twins (owners of Hollywood’s Piano Bar) are opening a Cuban rum bar in the former Blacklight (2nd St. and Vermont) on January 10. The bar will feature live salsa bands and “a sophisticated cocktail program, care of a superstar (and still off-the-record) bartender.”

Back in November, Paul Rossi (Food and Beverage Director for the JW Marriott) said in a blogdowntown interview that the new hotel will feature a classic cocktail lounge called The Mixing Room. The 200-seat bar will also offer a small plates menu. Elsewhere in the property: Glance (a lobby lounge and wine bar) and ION, a poolside bar.

Glendon Kitchen & Cocktails

Also opening in mid-February is Glendon Kitchen & Cocktails, taking over the Moustache Cafe space in Westwood Village. According to LA Weekly, Glendon Kitchen “will cater to UCLA students and old-time Westsiders.” While I used to be the former, I am most definitely the latter. A welcome addition to a neighborhood that can use more cocktail destinations.

In his December newsletter, Joe Keeper wrote that his wonderful Bar Keeper store is in the process of acquiring a liquor license for small batch spirits and liquors. If all goes well, he’ll have the license by early summer. In the meantime, you can stop by and show support by signing the petition.

Whew, that’s quite a first half of the year already! I’d better start doing liver stretches, especially with Burning Man only eight months away…

Since its relaunch in February, the Radio Room has hosted top mixologists from around the country, including San Francisco’s Erick Castro (Bourbon & Branch); New York’s Alex Day (Death & Co.) and Richie Boccato (Milk & Honey, Little Branch, Dutch Kills); Boston’s John Gertsen and Misty Kalkofen (Drink); Amanda Gager (StripSteak, Las Vegas) and Jacqueline Patterson (Heaven’s Dog, San Francisco). In September, the Radio Room welcomed John Lermayer (The Florida Room, Miami) and Jeffrey Morgenthaler (Clyde Common, Portland) for one of their busiest nights to date.

After taking a break in October, the Radio Room returns on November 10, featuring guest mixologists from Cure (New Orleans): Kirk Estopinal, Richard Gomez, and Danny Valdez. Joining them will be Plymouth Gin brand ambassador Simon Ford.

In addition to imbibing cocktails from the Edison’s ace bartending team, guests will be entertained by the Elliot Deutch Big Band, “the hardest swinging band of up-and-coming musicians to hit LA in recent memory.”

An occasional roundup of L.A. cocktail culture in various media.

Besides Los Angeles Magazine’s cover story on L.A.’s Best New Bars and coverage in its annual Best of L.A. issue, L.A. cocktail culture was well represented this summer:

The Edison was named “America’s Bartending Mecca” in the cover story for the September/October issue of Mutineer Magazine, with the July 29th Radio Room serving as the issue’s launch party. According to Mutineer’s website, the issue is sold out; wonder if having the Edison’s Green Fairy on the cover had anything to do with that?

Rivera’s Julian Cox was named one of “The New Tequiliers” in the August issue of Wine & Spirits Magazine. The article mentions Julian’s Anejo Honey Sour and Pancho Villa cocktails, as well as the seminars top tequila producers conduct to train his staff.

In the September/October issue of Imbibe, the Varnish’s Eric Alperin discusses a variety of gin-based cocktails in Ginning Things Up, including the Gin-Gin Mule, the Eastside, the Turf, the Angel Face, and his 1930s-style take on the classic Martini. Included in the print edition only is Alperin’s recipe for his genever-based Skid Row.

On Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, LA Times Magazine featured Liquid Heaven, a great article highlighting some of the city’s best cocktails. Besides photos and quotes, the online edition includes bonus videos of L.A.’s top mixologists demonstrating how to make their creations. It’s an excellent snapshot of the cutting edge of the Los Angeles cocktail scene, which writer Wyatt Peabody boldly states is “the most exciting” in America.

San Francisco and Las Vegas Rock the Radio Room

With budgets as tight as they are, why spend precious dollars on airfare to visit the country’s top bars, when the Edison flies in the country’s best bartenders every month? On July 28, the Edison’s latest installment of its Radio Room series featured visiting mixologists Amanda Gager (StripSteak, Las Vegas) and Jacqueline Patterson (Heaven’s Dog, San Francisco). As with other Radio Room nights, the cocktail menu featured signature drinks created by the guest bartenders, who mixed drinks alongside the Edison’s own crack team.

By the time I arrived, my friends Amy and Lena had already ordered. My first cocktail was the Cat’s Dream, which turned out to be the consensus favorite of the night. It was excellent, the smokiness of the scotch offset by the smooth, herbal sweetness of the Carpano vermouth. The Fernet and ginger could have been overwhelming, but instead provided depth and complexity. Served in a coupe, the Cat’s Dream is definitely a cocktail to seek out the next time I’m in SF.

Mr. McIlhenny was a fave.

For Round Two I went with a Rum Diary, a straightforward and refreshing drink that was also created by Jackie. I’m sure that naming it after a Hunter S. Thompson novel had nothing to do with why it tasted so good. Lena had the misfortune of ordering the Red 507. We all tried it, and though we couldn’t decide where it went wrong, somewhere it definitely did go wrong. This isn’t to say that the original recipe was bad, but since we weren’t at the bar and didn’t know who actually made our drinks, we decided not to assign blame. Another miss was Amy’s Russe-Franc; she thought the Fernet was too dominant and undermined the overall flavor profile.

Thankfully those were the only misfires of the night. Lena loved the Mr. McIlhenny, so much so that it was her first and last cocktail of the night. I followed her lead and ordered another Cat’s Dream, a great way to end an enjoyable Radio Room session.

What began as “Speakeasy Sundays” at the Edison (cocktails and cabaret in the intimate Radio Room) has grown into a monthly Tuesday night event that takes place throughout the venue.

Since its relaunch in February, the Radio Room has welcomed top mixologists from around the country, including San Francisco’s Erick Castro (Bourbon & Branch); New York’s Alex Day (Death & Co.) and Richie Boccato (Milk & Honey, Little Branch, Dutch Kills); and Boston’s John Gertsen and Misty Kalkofen (Drink).

On July 28, the Radio Room hosts visiting mixologists Amanda Gager (StripSteak, Las Vegas) and Jacqueline Patterson (Heaven’s Dog, San Francisco). In addition to imbibing cocktails from the Edison’s ace bartending team, guests will be entertained by local faves Imagika, Leila Bazzani and Karina Bakmadzhyan. Limited presales are available now; tickets will also be sold at the door the night of the event.
