The legendary tattoo artist Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins left behind an enduring legacy that is celebrated in the documentary Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins.
While the quote above may be more appropriate than ever, FDR said those words back in 1933, after 13 years of Prohibition were finally ended.

From repealday.org: “On December 5th, 1933, Utah, the final state needed for a three quarters majority, ratified the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition and restoring the American right to a celebratory drink.”

Although it’s been 76 years since the end of Prohibition, Repeal Day is a relatively new tradition, the brainchild of Portland mixologist Jeffrey Morgenthaler. You can read the story behind Repeal Day on his blog.

REPEAL DAY

~

This Saturday, December 5th, some of L.A.’s favorite cocktail venues are hosting Repeal Day celebrations. So do your patriotic duty, exercise your rights as an American, and raise a glass (or two) to the 21st Amendment!

The Edison

As we’ve come to expect from the Edison, when they do an event, they go all out. Repeal Day is no different, as the Edison will be offering ice skating with Santa at Pershing Square, then a special cocktail featuring its exclusive blend of Woodford Reserve back at the Edison.

6pm-8pm

Sunday Suppers at Lucques have become an L.A. dining institution, a guaranteed splendid evening at any time of the year. This past Sunday, to kill some time while waiting for another Comme Ca Block Party to begin, I stopped by Lucques, not knowing it happened to be the 9th Annual All-American Rib Fest. (Lucques staff wearing cowboy outfits and country music standards on the stereo were big hints, but I digress.)

As I sat at the bar, endless platters of BBQ and all the fixin’s were sent out from the kitchen. Had I not been stuffed from an earlier dim sum session, I would’ve gladly participated in the $45 protein extravaganza. Here’s a rundown of the menu:

St. Louis style pork ribs

Braised beef back ribs

Spicy lamb spare ribs

“Too-hot-to-handle” chicken wings

~~~
Cole slaw & baked beans
Long-cooked collard greens
Buttered corn-on-the-cob
Watermelon and lime salad
Grilled cornbread & wonder bread
~~~

Warm peach and blackberry crisp with vanilla ice cream

To wash all of this glorious food down, Lucques offered two special lemonades, one with brandy and the other with Jack Daniel’s. Both seemed to be very popular on Sunday. The only thing missing was a “wafer-thin mint” at the end of the meal.

A Lucques Standard: the Maker's Ruby.

While everyone indulged their inner carnivore, I quickly scanned the cocktail list and decided on one of the Lucques Standards, a Maker’s Ruby:

Maker’s Mark bourbon

fresh Fitzgerald Ruby Diamond nectarines

a splash of Bundaberg ginger beer

The Maker’s Ruby was excellent, tangy and perfectly refreshing for a late Sunday afternoon. I’m sure it would’ve made an excellent compliment to all of the smoke and spice.

Other Standards include the Lucques Gimlet (Hangar One vodka with fresh lime juice and mint) and the Green Hound (Chopin vodka, cucumber and grapefruit juice, garnished with mint).

~

Owner/chef Suzanne Goin is renowned for her seasonal menus, so it’s no surprise that the drinks at Lucques reflect that same commitment to freshness and quality. With that in mind I next ordered from the Seasonal Cocktail list, the Fragola Balsamico:

Miller’s gin

strawberries

Cointreau

balsamic reduction

Summer in a glass: the Fragola Balsamico.

If you’ve ever wanted to sip summer in a chilled glass, the Fragola is the cocktail for you. The Miller’s botanical notes are dominated by the upfront, fresh strawberry aroma and flavor, anchored by the bitter orange of the Cointreau and enhanced by the balsamic reduction. The Fragola’s brilliant red hue makes for an easy conversation starter.

The other Seasonal option was the Black on Black: Leblon cachaça with blackberry compote, thyme, black salt rim.

With summer winding down, now is the time to savor the best of the season. At Lucques, that means more than just what’s on your plate; you’ll taste it in your cocktails as well.

~ Photos by Lena Watanabe

Take the former “Riot Hyatt” on Sunset, throw in a $48M renovation by the New York firm Janson Goldstein, add the Hindi word for “personal service,” and what do you get? Why, the Andaz West Hollywood, of course. The bar at RH, the hotel’s signature restaurant, had been on my “to-do” list since its January opening, and I gladly accepted an invitation to sample the new summer cocktails.

The bar is strikingly designed, situated in a prime location where the floor-to-ceiling windows facing Sunset Blvd. are put to optimal use. My friend Lena and I were introduced to Beau du Bois, who (along with Kassy Dean, Helena Pechacek and Neala Steaury) created the cocktails we were about to sample. As with other mixologists in high end restaurants, Beau works closely with RH chef Sebastien Archambault to get the freshest seasonal ingredients. Beau’s in-depth explanation of the creative process behind his drink menu reflects a thoughtfulness and ambition that will take him far in the cocktail world.

They call me Mr. Plant.

Before tasting the new drinks, we started off with two of RH’s top sellers, the Mr. Plant and the Steelo.

Mr. Plant

No. 209 Gin

cucumber

tangerine juice

agave syrup

soda

Named of course after Robert Plant (who famously shouted “I am a Golden God!” from one of the Hyatt’s balconies), the Mr. Plant starts with No. 209, which has gin’s typical juniper aroma enhanced by citrus, fruit, and spicy notes. When the No. 209 is mixed with the cucumber, tangerine and agave, the result is an outstanding, refreshing cocktail that goes down easily.

The Steelo.

The Steelo

Hangar One Vodka

St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

grapefruit juice

blueberries

Not to be outdone is the Steelo, another top seller that combines the smoothness of the Hangar One with the wonderful floral scent of the ubiquitous St. Germain. Served up, the Steelo tastes as great as it looks. If I had to pick just one, I’d give a slight edge to the Mr. Plant over the Steelo. That being said, both drinks are fantastic and it’s easy to see why they’re bestsellers.

On to the season’s new cocktails, which made their debut last week. Unless otherwise noted, all cocktails were created by Beau du Bois.

The Greenland.

Greenland

TRU Organic Vodka

cucumber organic liquor

avocado

green apple juice

cilantro

This was the first of the new cocktails that we sampled, and it’s a knockout. The TRU vodka has a clean, fresh taste that’s ready-made to play with the other ingredients. The cucumber provides a refreshing, subtle taste; the green apple juice (Beau took months to source it) gives it a sweet and tart kick; the cilantro a subtle bite and citrus finish. The avocado adds an unexpected texture that’s hard to place. Just as egg whites froth up a Ramos Gin Fizz, the avocado provides depth and body that takes the Greenland to the next level.

The Assemblage.

Assemblage

G’Vine Gin

blackberry

raspberry

Cointreau

cane brown sugar

limes

G’Vine Gin is distilled from the Ugni Blanc grape, in the Cognac region of France. It’s then infused with nine botanicals, giving the G’Vine a floral complexity that enhances the Assemblage’s unique flavor profile. Add in the bitter orange of the Cointreau, the fruit flavors, a bit of sweet and a light tartness, and you have another summertime winner.

Rush hour: the 405 Crush.

405 Crush (created by Kassy Dean)

Leblon Cachaça

strawberries

limes

agave syrup

Leblon is an award-winning, ultra-premium cachaça distilled from sugar cane and aged in Cognac casks. The distilling process has given the Leblon a dominant fruit profile, and when mixed with the fruit and agave, results in a nice take on the classic Caipirinha. A bit of a split vote with this one; while I enjoyed it, Lena needled me for liking such a “girly drink.” Fruity, sweet cocktails aren’t for everyone, but I could drink these all day long, especially if I’m poolside.

Gooseberry Mojito

Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum

The Gooseberry Mojito.

gooseberries

limes

wild mint leaves

Few cocktails can rival the mojito when it comes to hot weather refreshment, and Beau’s sublime, sophisticated interpretation is outstanding. It all starts with the Matusalem Gran Reserva, a blended rum that’s been solera-aged for 15 years. Its vanilla, molasses, and caramel aromas are complemented by the lime and mint, while the gooseberries add tartness and acid. For flavor and visual appeal it’s hard to beat.

Of the new menu, the Greenland and the Gooseberry Mojito were the consensus favorites, and both drinks are sure to appeal to imbibers well into the dog days of summer. Time prevented us from trying two other new drinks, the Carnival (Papagayo Organic White Rum, white peach juice, raspberries) and Helena’s Ginger Mariachi (Corzo Silver Tequila, Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur, jalapeno, cucumber, tomato juice, lime juice, salt & pepper). Needless say, we’ll be back to try these out.

Serrano ham and crostini.

Happy Hour @ RH

Shrimp ceviche.

RH hosts a happy hour in its bar area from 5pm to 7pm on Monday through Friday. Although the cocktails are full price, a real bargain can be found in the delicious, free bar menu bites: shrimp ceviche, serrano ham with crostini, mushroom and egg tart, and soudourgh with olive tapenade. We’re way beyond chips and salsa here, folks. If the number of empty shot glasses were any indication, the shrimp ceviche was the favorite snack, matched perfectly to the summer cocktails.

Lena wanted me to mention how much she appreciated Beau’s use of agave nectar in lieu of simple syrup. As anyone with dietary restrictions can attest, it’s not always easy to find an entire drink list that can be enjoyed without worry, as is the case at RH.

~

Last Sunday, Comme Ça hosted a special “Block” Party to celebrate the start of its Bastille Week festivities. For this occasion, the restaurant featured a special menu with $5 cocktails and $7 appetizers. To chill their drinks, bartenders chipped ice from a huge 200 lb. block strategically placed on the bar. By the time my fellow imbibers Scot and Ku arrived, a lively Sunday afternoon crowd had filled the bar area, while the bartenders quickly chiseled away to keep pace with drink orders.

First up for me was the AF 69, made with Martin Miller’s gin, Cointreau, honey and lemon verbena. According to the L.A. Times, the AF 69 was named after the daily Air France flight from L.A. to Paris. It’s a cocktail worthy of its transatlantic name: the Martin Miller’s floral notes were very prominent, balanced nicely by the bitter orange of the Cointreau and the sharp fragrance of the lemon verbena.

The Mr. Rogers.

Scot chose the Mr. Rogers, made with Matusalem Platino rum, thyme, apricots, Angostura bitters, and grapefruit peel. We all thought it was a solid cocktail, but of the three Block Party drinks it was probably our least favorite. It was certainly an enjoyable drink, it just wasn’t one that was at the level of the other two.

Ku opted for The Girl From La Cienega, made with Three Olives vodka, cachaca, house made blueberry syrup, lime and basil. Colorful, refreshing and delicious, the Girl was hands down our favorite of the three Block Party drinks. The Girl’s refreshing flavors worked marvelously together and she’ll no doubt be very popular this summer.

Our fave: The Girl from La Cienega.

The bar area was too congested for us to stand around and enjoy our cocktails, so we were seated in one of the dining rooms, all the better to refresh our drinks. We didn’t try any of the Block Party apps, but instead ordered up a large steak tartare (Coleman Ranch beef, capers, and cornichons), delicious as always.

We closed out with another round over at the bar, which by this time had cleared up a bit. The ice block was now a mere shadow of its former self, but the chips continued to fly as drink orders rolled in. The Block Party was a fun way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon, and a great kick off for Comme Ça’s Bastille Week.

Don’t worry if you missed the Block Party; Comme Ça continues the festivities with a $40 prix fixe “Quatorze Juillet” dinner. Available through July 18, this special Bastille Day menu features three courses, the Block Party cocktails, and special wines for New Wine Bastille Day. Vive la France!
