On Tuesday, July 12th, 1886 Bar at The Raymond introduces Parlor Hour, a new happy hour that takes place every Tuesday through Friday from 5pm to 7pm. Parlor Hour will feature a $7 daily cocktail special, 1886 Champagne Punch by the glass ($6), $4 bottled craft beer, and selected $5 wines by the glass. The 1886 Champagne Punch is an assortment of Strawberry Shrub topped with Champagne, prepared and served from a teapot, and usually serves six or more. The punch was inspired from an original recipe served during one of the opening events at the Raymond Hotel back in 1886, and going forward it will change seasonally. To pair with the libations, guests can order from Chef Tim Guiltinan’s 1886 Bar Menu, as well as select from several chalkboard specials.

The Royal Raymond

The original Raymond Hotel, known as the Royal Raymond.

Parlor Hour is named in tribute to the historic gathering place of Walter Raymond‘s eponymous hotel, originally known as the Royal Raymond. In his book A Gentleman of the Old School: Walter Raymond and the Raymond Hotel, Arthur E. Raymond (Walter Raymond’s son) describes a space called The Parlor, an “area facing a large bay window in the main rotunda that was known as the ‘Amen Corner’ and a number of cronies gathered there every evening to swap stories, gossip, smoke, and enjoy their highballs.” According to author Rick Thomas (South Pasadena’s Raymond Hotel) it was also known as the Ladies Grand Parlor, when “women would meet and have appropriate conversation and, of course, afternoon tea.”
